About Ian

Ian Clarke MA (Cantab), Mus.B, ARCO, ARCM (Trinity College, Cambridge)

Ian Clarke

Born in Northampton, Ian Clarke returned to his native town in 1981 after studies in Cambridge and London, building up a fine musical tradition over ten years as director of Music at All Saints Church and winning particular acclaim as an organ recitalist and choir trainer.

Ian now pursues an active freelance career, he conducts three choirs, including the highly acclaimed chamber group, the Swarbrick Singers. He plays with several instrumental ensembles as solo harpsichordist and organist, including the City of Oxford Orchestra and the London Harpsichord Ensemble.

Ian’s keyboard work and instrumental groups take him far afield, and he has appeared on BBC radio and television as a player and conductor.

After studies at London and Cambridge as an organ scholar of Trinity College, Ian has been Director of Music at All Saints’ and St Matthew’s Churches in Northampton. Now, in addition to teaching and lecturing, his busy freelance carer includes choral conducting, piano solo and accompanying work and playing with several ensembles as solo harpsichordist and organist. Ian has appeared on BBC radio and television, both as player and conductor and is on the panel of examiners for the ABRSM, for whom he has travelled widely, both nationally and internationally.
